Thai Visa Application 

These are the options for a Thai visa from the Thai Consulate in Chennai. You will note that this is managed by VFS India and their address and location of the Thai Consulate as well as the visa processing center has also been added with their email and telephone numbers.

Tourist Visa

  • Passport  with validity no less than 6 months and TWO blank pages;
  • Also Two signed copies of front and last page of passport;
  • Completed application form;
  • Two color photographs (3.5 x 4.5 cm. taken within the last 3 months with white background)
  • Non-refundable Visa fees of INR 2,500/- for single entry;
  • Also evidence of residence in India (if you are a non-Indian passport holder);
  • Itinerary during stay in Thailand;
  • Currently also medical insurance covering all expenditures incl. Covid to USD 100,000 for a year;
  • Confirmed hotel booking or if living with a friend, a copy letter and copy of their Thai ID Card;
  • Certified bank statement with consistent balance of 500,000 INR over a period of 6 months;
  • Evidence of occupation and of the monthly income.

These rules do change such as the Covid insurance is new. This might be dropped as rules change so always check with VFS or the Consulate if there are any changes in that regard. These rules and prices are as at February 2022. The process takes 3 to 5 working days.

Non-immigrant O Visa (Married to a Thai)

If you are married to a Thai national then you can apply for a 3 month Thai “O” visa from Chennai. The documents needed as well as the cost for this has been added below. Rules and costs do change and you should always check for any updates. There is currently Covid insurance coverage which is new, but as time passes the rule might change.

  • Passport with validity no less than 6 months and TWO blank pages;
  • Also Two signed copies of front and last page of passport;
  • Completed application form;
  • Two color photographs (3.5 x 4.5 cm. taken within the last 3 months with white background)
  • Non-refundable Visa fees of INR 5,000/- for Single Entry
  • Original Thai or Indian marriage certificate or a notarized copy attested by MEA
  • Signed copy of spouse’s Thai ID card and passport, certified by holder
  • Birth Certificate of minor(s) (if applicable)
  • Signed cover letter from spouse mentioning the duration of stay and address
  • Evidence of Employment such as letter from employer
  • Your Bank Statement (Latest 6 months certified by your bank)
  • They might also request a signed copy of her Tabian Baan or house registration.
These are currently the documents needed for the marriage visa for Thailand. The last most common visa is the Thai retirement visa for an Indian national. The current rules and prices are as at February 2022. The process takes 3 to 5 working days.

Non-immigrant O-A Visa (Retirement Visa)

If you are going to retire in Thailand then you need to meet the financial requirements as well as be 50 years or older.The following documents would be needed.

  • Your passport with validity no less than 6 months and TWO blank pages;
  • You also need Six color photographs;
  • Complete the application form for non-immigration visa “O-A”;
  • The non-refundable visa fees of INR 5,000/- for single entry and INR12,000 for multiple entries;
  • You also need a resume mentioning in detail the applicant’s background and personal information;
  • You will also need a criminal record clearance certificate, not more than 3 months old;
  • Currently also medical insurance covering all expenditures incl. Covid to USD 100,000 for a year;
  • Medical Certificate, not more than 3 months old;*
  • Applicant’s photocopy of bank statement having a minimum balance equivalent to 800,000 Thai Baht (THB);
  • Evidence of Accommodation;

The medical certificate is there to show that you do not suffer from Leprosy, Tuberculosis, Elephantiasis, Drug Addiction  and/or  Third stage of Syphilis. The Covid coverage might change as this is at February 2022 as being part of the rules. The rest of the rules have remained the same for many years.

The financial requirements is to show 800,000 THB in the bank. This requires a copy as well as a letter from the bank to confirm the money. As for accomodation, this can be a hotel book, lease agreement or staying with friends where you would need a letter from them as well as their Thai ID card.

Requesting a new passport (E-Passport)

If you want to apply for a new Thai passport while in Chennai you will need to make an appointment at the Consulate. They will only do this by appointment. Follow the instructions below as to how best to obtain your e-passport. Note the cost of a new passport as well as the timeline in obtain your passport.

  • Firstly you will need to make an appointment at Tel. +91-444-2300-730
  • You have to apply by yourself. If you are under 20 your parents must accompany you;
  • It takes 4-6 weeks to obtain the passport or e-passport;
  • Current cost, 5-year passport fee of Rs. 2,500, a 10-year passport fee (for adults only) Rs.4,000.

You will need the following documents to renew your Thai passport.

  • Current passport or copy
  • 1 copy of ID card or house registration
  • Copy of name or surname change certificate (if any)
If you lost your passport. Report this to the local police. Take the notification receipt to the immigration office of the locality where you enter China. The Immigration Department will confirm your entry by issuing a notification voucher. Take this with you to the Embassy or Consulate.

Temporary passport for lost passport

If you lost your passport you will need to report this to the local police. They will give you a case number as the Consulate will need this to issue you a new passport. The temporary passport is valid for 1 year only.

  • Complete the application form for the passport;
  • Have a copy of your Thai ID card or house registration or a copy of the original passport;
  • Also bring Three passport-sized photographs;
  • Also 2 sets of temporary passport application forms;
  • Complete 2 sets of investigation records;
  • Also 2 sets of records supporting the petition in case of lost passports.

These are the documents that you will need. If the passport has been expired or close to expiration then fewer documents would be needed. For the expired passport you will need the following:

  • Copy of your Thai ID card or the original passport and a copy;
  • Also Three passport-sized photographs;
  • Then also 2 sets of temporary passport request forms
  • Also 2 sets of investigation records.

Thai Identity Card Replacement

There are a number of issues when it comes to the Thai identity cards. You need to replace your thai ID card it is best to ensure that you start the process at least 60 days before the card’s expiration date. For renewal of Thai ID card you will need you original Thai ID card as well as your proof of residence in India.

Thai ID card is lost or destroyed

  • Copy of the original ID card; (if any)
  • Photo identification card issued by the Thai government such as E-Passport, driving license;
  • Documents showing residence in India.

Thai ID card damaged

  • Your damaged original Thai ID card;
  • Photo identification card issued by the Thai government such as E-Passport, driving license;
  • Documents showing residence in India.

Thai ID card name or surname change

  • Request for a change of card due to name or surname change;
  • Your original Thai ID card;
  • Proof of name or surname change;
  • Documents showing residence in India.

These are the most common changes to the thai ID card. This outside of replacing your ID card being that it is either damaged, lost or expired or close to expiration.
