Thai Consulate Chicago

The Consulate is responsible for providing consular assistance to Thai nationals living in its jurisdiction, as well as issuing visas and promoting trade, investment, and cultural exchanges between Thailand and the Midwest region. In addition, the Consulate also participates in various community events and promotes Thai culture and tourism to the local population.

 

 

Tourist Visa Requirements

If your purpose of visit to Thailand is solely for tourism, categorized as “TR”, and you plan to engage in activities such as Muay Thai training, scuba diving, or yoga, then you will need to obtain a visa with a validity of 3 months. With this type of visa, you will be allowed to stay in Thailand for a maximum period of 60 days starting from your arrival date. It is important to note that the clock starts ticking on the first day you set foot in the country, so plan your itinerary accordingly to avoid overstaying your visa.

(Single Entry)

To apply for a Single Entry Tourist Visa, applicants must provide a range of documents. These include their actual Passport or Travel Document, which must not expire within 6 months and must have at least one completely empty visa page. They must also complete and sign a Visa application form, which can be downloaded online [ Download ] . The applicant should provide one Passport photo, taken within 6 months, which should be front-facing, 2” x 2” and in color.

Additionally, applicants should include a copy of their U.S. green card or U.S. visa, an airline ticket or itinerary showing flights into and out of Thailand, and a recent bank statement that reflects at least $700 per person, or $1,000 per family. If the applicant does not have their own bank statement, they can submit an Affidavit of Support with the bank statement of the person who supports them. Online Bank Statement should show the applicant’s name and balance.

(Multiple Entry)

To apply for the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV), there are several required documents and qualifications to meet. Firstly, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident. The application process also requires the applicant’s actual Passport or Travel Document, which must not expire within 6 months and should have at least one completely empty visa page. A copy of the “picture-page” of the passport must also be included. In addition, a completed Visa application form [ Download ] is required, including proposed address in Thailand.

One passport photo (2” x 2”) color, front-view, taken within 6 months is also needed. The applicant must also submit a copy of a U.S. permanent resident alien card or a valid U.S. visa with employment verification or proof of full-time student status. Other required documents include airline tickets or itinerary showing confirmed flights with multiple entries, recent bank statements or evidence of adequate finance (minimum of US$7,000), employment verification letter, copy of hotel reservation, and a $200 fee.

Non-Immigrant Long Stay Visa (O-X)

 

To begin with, the purpose of the Non-O-X visa is to encourage long-term stays in Thailand for foreign travelers. This visa is available for nationals from 14 countries who are aged 50 or above and allows them to stay in the country for a maximum period of 10 years. However, it is important to note that employment of any kind is strictly prohibited.

In terms of eligibility criteria, the applicant must be at least 50 years old and a national and passport holder of one of the eligible countries, including Japan, Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States of America.

Additionally, the applicant must have a bank deposit of not less than 3 million Baht in Thailand or a bank deposit of not less than 1.8 million Baht and an annual income of not less than 1.2 million Baht per year, which must be maintained in the bank deposit in full for at least one year and kept at not less than 1.5 million Baht thereafter.

Furthermore, the applicant must have Thai health insurance for the duration of their stay, with coverage for outpatient treatment of not less than 40,000 Baht and inpatient treatment of not less than 400,000 Baht. It is also important that the applicant is not prohibited from entering the Kingdom as provided by the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979) and has no criminal record in Thailand or their country of nationality and residence. Finally, the applicant must not have prohibited diseases such as Leprosy, Tuberculosis, Elephantiasis, drug addiction, or the third stage of Syphilis as indicated in Ministerial Regulation No. 14 (B.E. 2535).

To discuss the purpose of the Non-O-X visa, it is intended to encourage extended stays for foreign visitors to Thailand. Retirement in Thailand (O-A visa)

 

When applying for a Retirement in Thailand visa (O-A visa), certain requirements must be met. The applicant must be at least 50 years old and must provide documentation as proof of retirement, including a bank statement or monthly/yearly income, a copy of their criminal record from the local police department, and a certificate of health. These documents must be certified by a Notary Public, and the notary public’s signature must be certified by the Secretary of State.

Additionally, as of October 31, 2019, visa applicants for Non-Immigrant Visa “O-A” (for retirement long stay) must have health insurance that covers the entire period of their stay in Thailand. The health insurance policy must have coverage of at least 400,000 Thai Baht per policy year for in-patient treatment and at least 40,000 Thai Baht per policy year for out-patient treatment. The applicant must provide a completed “Insurance Certificate” and an original health insurance policy. A copy of the health insurance policy may be accepted only if the applicant purchases it from participating Thai insurance companies.

 

 

Thai Passport

To apply for an Ordinary E-Passport, the general applicant (over 20 years old) must submit the following documents along with the E-Passport fee of $37.00 for a 5-year E-Passport or $55.00 for a 10-year E-Passport payable by money order or cashier’s check only made payable to “Royal Thai Consulate General, Chicago.” The processing time for an E-Passport is 4-6 weeks.

Required documents include the current Thai Passport, original Thai Citizenship I.D. Card/House Registration which contains the 13-digit Personal Number with a photocopy. If the applicant is assigned to the Central Registration, he/she must contact the District Office in Thailand directly. Additionally, a postal fee of $9.00 for Chicago area or $28.00 for express mail (out of Chicago) is required and must be paid in cash.

Lost Passport

If your Thai passport is lost, there are certain steps you need to follow in order to receive a replacement. Firstly, it is crucial that you report the lost passport to the local police station immediately and obtain a full police report, which will serve as evidence for the issuance of a new e-passport.

To apply for a replacement, you will need to follow the same procedures as applying for an electronic passport, with the additional requirement of certain important documents. These documents include a request form for an e-passport, an investigation record, the police report receipt, a copy of the lost passport (if available), and a copy of your ID card.

Furthermore, there is a fee of $37.00 for a 5-year passport or $55.00 for a 10-year passport, which must be paid via bank Money Order or Cashier’s Check only, payable to the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Chicago.

Emergency Passport

Emergency Passport (EP) and Emergency Travel Document (ETD) are issued to persons whose passport is lost, damaged or expired. with complete evidence for issuing a passport and  wishing to return to Thailand urgently  The Emergency Passport (EP) and Emergency Travel Document (ETD) may not be used to travel to other countries. because there is no microchip
You can make a request in 2 ways:
1.  Emergency Passport (EP) is valid for 1 year and can be used to enter Thailand only once. Must come to do the process in person at the Consulate-General only, cannot do it by post, which takes 5 working days.

2.  Emergency Travel Document (ETD)  is valid for 30 days and can be used to enter Thailand only once.  Applications can be submitted by post  , which takes 5 working days (not counting the postage period).

Thai ID card

Starting from October 15, 2013, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Chicago has begun providing a service for issuing Thai ID cards to Thai citizens who have held ID cards before and wish to apply for a new one. Those interested in this service may visit the consulate from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) during the hours of 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Notification of Birth

When applying for a Thai birth certificate, there are specific requirements and supporting evidence that must be submitted to the Consulate General in Chicago. Firstly, the birth notification must be submitted by a person of Thai nationality, the father or the mother. The application can be sent through post or in person during working hours on weekdays except for public holidays. Moreover, the child must be born within the territory of the Consulate General in Chicago and must have at least one parent with Thai nationality.

To complete the application, there are supporting documents that must be provided, including valid Thai passports of both parents, the child’s birth certificate issued by a local government agency, a marriage certificate issued by a local government agency or a Thai government agency, the child’s birth weight certificate issued from the hospital, a current photograph of the child, and other identification documents of the parents, such as a copy of a Thai ID card or a copy of a Thai house registration. Additionally, a copy of the parents’ local identification (Driver License or State ID) should also be included if available.

Petition for Legalization of Birth

To legalize a birth certificate, it is important to fill out the necessary information in detail, all in Thai. This includes information about the child who was born, as well as the father and mother. If the birth child has a second name on the birth certificate issued by a local government agency (State Birth Certificate), it is important to clearly fill out the second name and spelling in Thai in the legalization petition.

To submit a birth registration by post, several steps must be taken. First, fill out all details in Thai on the attached birth certificate form and sign the signature in Thai, as it appears on the Thai ID card. Additionally, include a certified signature form* certified by a local government agency, authenticated Document 4.2 from the Secretary of State, and other supporting documents that have been certified as true copies by the birth reporter.

After completing these steps, the form can be sent to the Consulate-General. Only the original Document 4.2 must be sent. Likewise with a self-addressed envelope with a stamp (Priority Mail). This must be included so that the Consulate-General can return the documents and the Thai birth certificate to the person. Processing time typically takes 7-10 days.
