However, certain criteria must be met to obtain Thai citizenship for children who are born abroad. These include the nationality of the father, mother, and child, as well as whether the parents are married or not.

If the parents have a registration of marriage, the child has the right to use the surname of both parents. But if the parents are not married, the child is the legitimate child of only the mother and has the right to use the mother’s surname. In case the mother wants the child to use the father’s surname which is illegitimate, the father must report the birth of the child with the local official in Singapore and give consent.

Child Name

Moreover, the child’s name on the Birth Certificate issued by the local authority of Singapore must match the name of the child who reported the birth to the Embassy, which must be in line with Thai law. If the applicant wants to apply for Thai nationality for the child, the name of the child should be consistent with Thai law. According to the law of Thailand, a child must use only the surname of the father or mother. If the father does not have a surname, the mother’s surname must be used in the Birth Certificate, and the consular officers will record the interrogation to confirm the use of the mother’s surname.

In addition, the child’s name and surname on Birth Certificates (Thai) consists of the first name, middle name (if any), and surname or family name. If the English name on the Birth Certificate (Singapore) indicates a middle name, it has to be written next to each other in Thai, as the law of Thailand.

If the father or mother has Thai nationality and wants to request a Birth Certificate (Thai) for their child that has other nationalities, which is the same nationality of the father or mother listed in the Birth Certificate (Singapore) as a nationality other than Thai nationality, they must provide evidence of their nationality. Required documents for obtaining a Thai Birth Certificate include a Singapore birth certificate, child’s valid passport (if any), valid passport and Thai national ID card (if applicable), Thai house registration (if applicable), and marriage certificate (if any).
