US – Letter of Affirmation

Thai EmbassyIn order to get the letter of affirmation which allows you to get married in Thailand you need to book an appointment at the US Embassy in Bangkok. The affidavit form needs to be completed and costs about $50 per affidavit. The process normally takes about 2 days as you need to return to collect the affidavit. The affidavit gets notarized at the Embassy and this costs $50 per seal.

Marriage Registration

There are two types of marriages in Thailand. There is the tradition Thai marriage or what they will call a village wedding. This is not legally binding until you register the wedding in Bangkok. To start the process of registering your marriage in Thailand you will need to collect documents from your Embassy in Bangkok. These would normally be your affidavit which states that you are single and get married. This documents is call a ‘Letter of Affirmation’ or a’ Freedom to Marry’ or as the British call it a “Letter of No Impediment” letter.
